Family photos with little kids aren’t always picture-perfect — and honestly? That’s what makes them special.

Whether you’re based in Brisbane or just feeling nervous about how the kids will go, I promise: it doesn’t have to be stressful. I’ve worked with all kinds of families, and some of my favourite images have come from the chaos.

Here are a few simple tips to help your session run smoothly (and yes, even be fun).

1. Don’t stress about getting it “right”

You don’t need perfectly behaved kids or a Pinterest-worthy vibe. Just show up as you are, and let the rest unfold naturally. I’ll guide you when needed and step back when I don’t.

2. Timing matters — but flexibility wins

Golden hour is always my first pick — that soft, warm light makes everything glow. But I also know that little ones don’t always love being out late. If we need to shift things to suit nap times or energy levels, we absolutely can.

3. Snacks are never a bad idea

Non-messy snacks can help break the ice or keep spirits up mid-session. Bring a favourite treat — it’s a great reset button (and sometimes a helpful bribe!).

4. Let your kids be themselves

They don’t need to perform. Some of the best moments come when they’re just doing their thing — exploring, cuddling, being a little silly. We’ll follow their lead and keep things relaxed.

5. Leave the perfection pressure behind

You’re not expected to keep everyone smiling or still — that’s not real life, and it’s not what we’re here to capture. The real, honest moments are what matter most.

6. I’ll bring the fun — you don’t need to be the entertainer

Worried your kids won’t cooperate? Don’t be. I’m always happy to get a bit silly, crack a joke, or start a game to bring out real smiles. Whether that means making funny noises, asking weird questions, or pulling out the classic “who can make Mum laugh first?” — we’ll keep things light and easy.

7. Save the outfit drama for last

If you’ve got babies or toddlers, wait to dress them in their photo outfits until you arrive at the location. It avoids snack spills, carseat creases, and last-minute wipe-downs — and keeps everyone a little less flustered before we even start.
